Powdered Elemental Sulphur

Postby Infinitee » Thu 10,Jul, 2008 2:20 pm

Good day ethnobots.

I was hoping i could call on the collective knowledge in regards to powdered sulphur. I have read on AE forum it being used on cuttings (cacti, I think) and after reading on it's use in food preservation I'm keen to know more and to obtain some.

So, can it be used on soft or hardwood cuttings with any success? Is it useful in addition with other root-encouraging preparations or alone?

What is the dose when using on cacti cuttings?

And is it close enough to food grade to be used on foods?

Oh yeah, and lastly where would I begin looking for some. My local mitre 10 staff just looked at me blankly when I asked (hehe, just the same as for the yeast nutrient and acetone, even though they stocked the latter) and I haven't found anything in the local gardening shops either. Any clues?

Thanks in advance - and retrospect also. :)

I saw it on the shelf at Bunnings yesterday.
I watched a snail crawl along the edge of a straight razor. That's my dream. That's my nightmare. Crawling, slithering, along the edge of a straight... razor... and surviving.

you could also try livestock feed suppliers, there is a powdered sulfur product for dusting animals for lice etc, not sure if this is exactly the same but it seems to have worked ok for me in my limited experience with cacti cuttings

yep should be fairly easily available at any good garden supliers

Essentially elemental sulphur is a fungicide so will work for any application that requires killing fungi - such as preventing rot in cacti. It is not systemic so is safe to use if you are after an 'organic' (not sure if it is actually allowed under certified organic systems, but for homebrew 'organic' it is close enough IMO) solution. It also means if the fungal infection has already penetrated into the cortex or cambium and is spreading through the plant, sulphur will be pretty much useless.

kmart and big w type places have it in the garden section as well
"Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able?
Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing?
Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing?
Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing?
Then why call him God?"
